Cyber Security is Everyone's Business?

Cyber Security is a Business Problem and Therefore Requires Effort from All!

Most, if not all of us are familiar with team sports. Some of us watch them and/or play them. No matter the team sport whether it’s Football, Basketball, Baseball, or Ice Hockey, the concept of team still applies. Each person on the team has a role, and in order for the team to be successful each person needs to understand their role and execute that role. While most roles in the team are unique, there are still some elements of each role that applies to every role within the team. An example of this is that in most cases there are players in roles who specialize/focus on scoring for the team. This is their main focus, hence the focal point of their role in the team, but scoring is still an overall team effort. This means that the other players in the other roles need to do their part in the team’s effort to score. This makes attempts to score more efficient, structured, and likely to be successful.

An organization is much like a group of people participating in a team sport. Each employee has their specific role but, in many cases, there are some elements that apply to everyone in all roles. This happens to be the case for Cyber Security. Of course, there are a few people at the organization who focus on cyber security much like the player who focuses on scoring, but in order for cyber security to be more efficient, structured, and likely to be successful, everyone needs to contribute from within their respective roles.

How Can I Contribute to Managing This Business Problem?

This is why Cyber Security is Everyone’s Business”. Easy ways to contribute are e.g., being aware of your surroundings while working so that no confidential information is disclosed to shoulder surfers (people who look at your screen from behind you), being more cautious with emails/SMS/IM messages you receive containing links/attachments, and ensuring you are knowledgeable about security policies while also adhering to those. Simple steps like those mentioned can go a long way towards protecting the organization and ensuring that you are fulfilling your role to the fullest. So, let your organization be like a championship team!! Championship teams are those that have individuals who understand their role and carry out that role for the maximum benefit of the team. In our case, the maximum benefit of our respective organizations.
